To register for a TIN in Tanzania, identify whether the applicant is an individual, company or other entity, prepare the official identity and business-location evidence, and submit the application through the TRA Taxpayer Portal. The TIN identifies the taxpayer; it does not by itself create a company, grant a business licence or prove VAT registration.

The Finance Act 2026 amended the Tax Administration Act so that a person who may become liable to tax through employment, business or investment must apply for a TIN within 15 days after commencement. For a business, do not wait until the first annual return.

Decide which TIN is needed

Individual or sole trader

A sole trader is not a separate company. The proprietor’s individual tax identity supports the business registration and tax obligations. TRA’s starting-business guidance asks an individual applicant for an accepted official identity such as NIDA, passport or voter identification, depending on eligibility.

Company or other entity

A limited company has its own legal personality and must use its own TIN. First complete the relevant registration through BRELA’s Online Registration System. Directors and shareholders may also need personal identifiers, but the company must not trade under a director’s TIN.

Employee or investor

An employee or investor may need an individual TIN even without a registered business. The correct portal route and supporting details depend on the source of income and taxpayer status.

Documents and information to prepare

For an individual or sole trader, prepare:

  • NIDA number or another identity document accepted for the applicant category.
  • Active email address and mobile number controlled by the applicant.
  • Residential and business physical address.
  • Description of the business activity and intended commencement date.
  • Local-government introduction letter where requested by TRA.
  • Lease agreement, title deed or other evidence of the business premises.
  • Business-name certificate if a name has already been registered.

For a company, also prepare:

  • Certificate of incorporation and BRELA registration details.
  • Memorandum and articles or registered constitution.
  • Directors’, shareholders’ and beneficial owners’ identifying information.
  • Registered office and operating-premises evidence.
  • Authority for the person submitting or following up the application.
  • Sector licence or permit where the activity is regulated.

Document requirements can change with taxpayer type and portal validation. Use the list displayed in the live application rather than uploading unrelated files.

How to register for a TIN in Tanzania online

To register online, follow these steps:

  1. Open the TRA Taxpayer Portal.
  2. Select the appropriate registration or TIN service and identify the applicant type accurately.
  3. Enter legal names exactly as they appear on NIDA, passport or BRELA records.
  4. Provide a working email and mobile number; these may be used for security and notifications.
  5. Enter the physical location, business activity, commencement date and ownership details.
  6. Upload clear, complete documents in the requested format.
  7. Review spellings, dates and numbers before submitting.
  8. Save the application reference and monitor messages in the portal and registered contact channels.
  9. Attend an interview or tax-evaluation appointment if TRA requests one.
  10. Download or collect the TIN certificate/confirmation after approval and activate the correct tax obligations.

TRA’s current starting-business page explains that, after a business TIN application, the applicant may be interviewed and evaluated for tax, then receive the assessment needed to proceed towards a tax clearance certificate for business licensing. The exact sequence varies by entity and office.

Key Thresholds and Deadlines for Tanzania Tax Registrations

Below is a quick comparison of the registration requirements, timelines, and thresholds detailed under the law:

Requirement / Threshold Individual / Sole Trader Limited Company
TIN Application Deadline Within 15 days of starting business (Finance Act 2026) Within 15 days of starting business (Finance Act 2026)
Primary Identity Proof NIDA, passport, or voter ID Certificate of Incorporation (BRELA)
Presumptive Income Tax Relief (First 12 Months) Available (turnover TZS 4M to TZS 200M, subject to conditions) Not applicable
Mandatory VAT Registration TZS 200M (12 months) or TZS 100M (6 months) TZS 200M (12 months) or TZS 100M (6 months)

What happens after the TIN is issued?

Register the relevant tax obligations

The TIN is the starting point, not the end. A company ordinarily needs an income-tax obligation. An employer needs PAYE and may need SDL. A business meeting VAT conditions must apply for VAT within 30 days of becoming liable. A person required to issue fiscal receipts must acquire an approved EFD or VFD.

Obtain the business licence

Local or sector licensing authorities may ask for a tax clearance or other TRA evidence. Confirm the current licensing checklist for the relevant council or regulator.

Separate business money

Open and use a business bank or mobile-money account appropriate to the legal form. Mixing company revenue with a director’s personal funds weakens the audit trail.

Display and quote tax identifiers correctly

Use the business’s legal name, TIN and, when registered, VRN consistently on invoices, contracts and tax records. Do not claim to be VAT registered until TRA has approved the VAT registration.

Example: sole trader versus company

Neema starts a design studio on 5 August 2026. She registers a business name but remains a sole proprietor. She should apply for the relevant TIN within 15 days of commencement—by 20 August on a straight count—and use her individual tax identity for the sole trade.

Kioo Digital Limited starts on the same date. Even if Neema is its director, the company needs a separate TIN. Payments and invoices for Kioo Digital Limited should not be issued under Neema’s sole-trader TIN.

The Finance Act 2026 also introduced a conditional first-12-month presumptive income-tax relief for an individual commencing business with turnover above TZS 4 million and not exceeding TZS 200 million. It requires an application and satisfaction of statutory conditions. It is not an automatic TIN exemption and does not apply to a company.

When must VAT registration follow?

Mandatory VAT registration generally arises at TZS 200 million taxable turnover in 12 months or TZS 100 million in six months ending in the previous month. Specified professional service providers and other categories may not rely on those general thresholds. An intending trader may apply before starting if the required evidence supports the planned taxable activity.

Apply through the Taxpayer Portal within 30 days after becoming liable. The TRA also publishes an application for VAT registration, but use the current portal workflow and confirm whether a downloadable form is needed for your case.

Common TIN application mistakes to avoid

  • Applying for a company under a director’s personal name.
  • Entering names that do not match NIDA or BRELA character for character.
  • Using an email or phone number the business cannot access.
  • Uploading cropped, expired or unreadable documents.
  • Giving a postal address but no usable physical-premises evidence.
  • Selecting a business activity that does not describe the actual operation.
  • Treating the TIN as a business licence or VAT certificate.
  • Failing to update TRA after a change of address, directors or activity.
  • Paying an unofficial agent who promises an instant TIN.

TIN registration checklist

  • Identify the applicant: individual, sole trader, company or other entity.
  • Complete BRELA registration first where a legal entity or business name is needed.
  • Gather identity, contact, premises and commencement information.
  • Apply within 15 days after commencement of a potentially taxable activity.
  • Submit through the official TRA Taxpayer Portal.
  • Save the application reference and respond promptly to TRA queries.
  • Attend the verification/interview if requested.
  • Confirm the legal name and TIN on the issued record.
  • Activate income tax, PAYE, SDL, VAT or withholding obligations as applicable.
  • Keep the TRA profile updated and protect portal access.

Frequently asked questions

Is TIN registration free?

TRA does not charge a tax merely for issuing a TIN. You may incur legitimate business-registration, licensing or professional-service costs. Use official channels and ask for a receipt for any government fee.

Can I have more than one TIN?

Do not create duplicate TINs for the same person. A company is a different taxpayer and has its own TIN, while the director retains an individual TIN. Contact TRA to correct or merge an accidental duplicate.

Can I register for VAT at the same time?

VAT is a separate tax registration with its own threshold and evidence. Complete it when liable or when a qualifying intending-trader/voluntary route is available.

How long does a TIN application take?

TRA does not publish one guaranteed completion time for every taxpayer. Accuracy, identity matching, document completeness and any required verification affect the timeline. Keep the application reference and follow up through official channels.

Does a freelancer need a TIN?

A self-employed person carrying on a taxable activity generally needs a TIN and must consider income tax, fiscal receipt and possibly VAT obligations based on the activity and turnover.
