Corporate Income Tax in Tanzania: What Companies Need to Know
Learn corporate income tax in Tanzania: the 30% standard rate, quarterly instalments, final return deadline, deductions, and practical tax records for companies.

Corporate income tax in Tanzania is generally charged at 30% of a company’s taxable profit, not its turnover or bank receipts. The company estimates annual tax, pays quarterly instalments and files a final return within six months after its accounting year ends. Accounting profit is only the starting point: tax law adjusts expenses, allowances, losses, incentives and related-party transactions.
Who pays corporate income tax?
Limited companies, trusts, clubs, associations and similar entities within the statutory definition are taxed on their income. A partnership is generally not taxed as a separate company; its partners account for their shares under the applicable rules. A company must file even when it reports a loss or no taxable income.
The ordinary accounting year is the calendar year unless TRA approves a different year. Use the year registered in the portal and do not change it informally to match a group company.
Corporate tax rates and special cases
The standard company rate is 30%. Specific incentives may apply only when every statutory condition is met. Sector, investment and location incentives vary; obtain the certificate or legal basis before using a reduced rate.
| Tax Category / Case | Applicable Tax Rate | Key Conditions / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Corporate Income Tax | 30% | Default rate on taxable profit for most companies. |
| Newly Listed DSE Companies | 25% | Applicable for three years with at least 30% public ownership. |
| New Pharmaceutical or Leather Manufacturers | 20% | Subject to approved performance agreements. |
| Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) | 1% of turnover | Applies to companies with tax losses for three consecutive years. |
Alternative minimum tax (AMT) can apply to a company with tax losses for three consecutive years. The Finance Act 2025 raised the AMT rate from the older 0.5% text to 1% of turnover, subject to statutory exclusions such as specified agriculture, health and education activities. No 2026 reversal was identified in the official Finance Act reviewed. Because the consolidated Income Tax Act PDF predates that 2025 change, read it together with the later Finance Acts.
Provisional income tax and instalments
A company generally submits an estimated income-tax statement and pays the first instalment within three months after its accounting year begins. The remaining instalments follow quarterly. A calendar-year company normally pays by 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December.
Example: Kilima Manufacturing Ltd estimates taxable profit of TZS 300,000,000 for 2026. At 30%, estimated tax is TZS 90,000,000. Before credits or adjustments, each of four equal instalments is TZS 22,500,000.
Update the estimate when forecasts change materially. TRA states that underestimation interest can arise when the estimate is below 80% of the correct amount. A cautious estimate is not a substitute for a documented forecast, but an unrealistically low estimate creates avoidable exposure.
From accounting profit to taxable profit
Start with reliable financial statements
Close revenue, cost of sales, payroll, expenses, finance costs, foreign exchange, assets and provisions. Reconcile fiscal sales and withholding certificates to the ledger.
Add back non-deductible expenditure
Common review areas include private or non-business costs, income tax itself, unsupported expenses, capital expenditure claimed as an immediate expense, fines and penalties, excessive or undocumented related-party charges and provisions that do not satisfy the deduction rule.
Claim deductions with evidence
An expense generally needs a business-income purpose and statutory support. Keep contracts, invoices, fiscal receipts, payment proof and a clear link to income-producing activity. A correct description in the ledger does not cure missing evidence.
Calculate tax depreciation/capital allowances
Accounting depreciation is not automatically the tax deduction. Maintain a tax asset register showing class, acquisition date, tax cost, private use, disposals and capital allowances.
Review losses and credits
Track tax losses by year, continuity and statutory restrictions. Reconcile provisional payments and valid withholding credits to TRA records. Do not claim a supplier’s certificate under the wrong company.
Example tax computation
Tumaini Logistics Ltd Example: Tumaini Logistics Ltd reports accounting profit before tax of TZS 180,000,000. It includes accounting depreciation of TZS 25,000,000, a TRA penalty of TZS 2,000,000 and unsupported private costs of TZS 3,000,000. Qualifying capital allowances are TZS 30,000,000. The simplified taxable profit is TZS 180,000,000 + TZS 25,000,000 + TZS 2,000,000 + TZS 3,000,000 − TZS 30,000,000 = TZS 180,000,000. At 30%, tax is TZS 54,000,000 before instalments and credits. The real computation may also include interest limitations, losses, foreign tax, incentives and transfer-pricing adjustments.
Filing the final company return
- Finalise and approve the financial statements.
- Reconcile revenue to VAT, EFD/VFD and withholding records.
- Prepare the tax computation and schedules.
- Reconcile instalments, credits and prior assessments.
- Sign in to the TRA Taxpayer Portal and select the correct accounting period.
- Complete required disclosures and attach the requested documents.
- Submit within six months after year-end and save the acknowledgement.
- Pay the balance by the same deadline and verify allocation.
TRA’s current company guidance says that where corporate gross income exceeds TZS 100 million, the final return must be prepared and certified by a Certified Public Accountant in public practice. This is based on gross income, even if the company makes a loss.
Related-party and cross-border transactions
Payments to shareholders, directors, group companies and foreign service providers need extra review. Confirm withholding tax, arm’s-length pricing, deductibility, source and treaty evidence. Maintain contemporaneous agreements and calculations. A management-fee invoice without evidence of services and benefit is a frequent audit weakness.

- Missing the quarterly estimate while focusing on the final return.

- Ignoring the TZS 100 million CPA certification threshold.
- Relying on a consolidated Act without later Finance Act amendments.

Frequently asked questions
What is the corporate income tax rate in Tanzania?
The standard rate is 30% of taxable profit. Narrow reduced rates or exemptions require specific statutory qualification and evidence.
When is the company tax return due?
Within six months after the end of the accounting year. A 31 December year-end ordinarily means 30 June of the following year.
Does a loss-making company file a return?
Yes. TRA states that companies must file whether or not they have taxable income. AMT and loss rules should also be reviewed.
Is withholding tax deducted by customers a tax expense?
Where withholding is creditable, it is normally a payment credit supported by a valid certificate, not an operating expense. Reconcile it to the portal and final tax calculation.
Can a company choose any year-end?
The calendar year is ordinary; a different accounting year requires the appropriate approval and portal setup.
