The most important Tanzania tax filing deadlines repeat in a predictable pattern: the 7th, 10th, 20th and 25th after a month, quarterly income-tax dates, and a six-month deadline after year-end. The correct date still depends on your registered obligations, accounting year and sector. This calendar explains what normally falls due, what information to prepare and how to avoid the common trap of confusing filing with payment.

Monthly TRA deadlines at a glance

Due date Ordinary obligation What to do
7th of following month PAYE File employment return, remit PAYE and retain payroll workings.
7th of following month Skills Development Levy Employers within scope file and pay 3.5% of gross emoluments.
7th of following month Withholding income tax Remit tax withheld from qualifying payments made in the month.
10th of following month Withholding VAT Appointed withholding agents file and remit amounts withheld.
20th of following month VAT File the VAT return and pay the net liability, including a nil return where required.
20th of following month Digital service/digital asset tax where applicable File and pay under the special regime; confirm registration and scope with TRA.
25th of following month Excise duty File and pay where the business is registered for excise.

If a public holiday or system notice affects a date, rely on a formal TRA announcement. Do not assume the deadline rolls forward merely because the office is closed. Submit early and preserve the confirmation.

A practical monthly workflow

Days 1–3: Close sales and purchases

Download EFD/VFD sales, reconcile them to invoices, bank and mobile money, and post credit notes correctly. Collect supplier tax invoices and separate business purchases from private or exempt-use costs.

Days 3–5: Complete payroll and withholding review

Confirm salary, overtime, bonuses, taxable allowances, approved retirement deductions and benefits in kind. Review every supplier payment by legal category—not merely by the description entered in the bank narration. A consultancy fee, rent payment and goods purchase can carry different withholding rates.

Days 5–7: File employment and withholding taxes

Prepare the return in IDRAS, generate the control number or payment reference, obtain approval and pay early enough for funds to clear. Filing a return without paying does not stop interest on unpaid tax; paying without filing does not satisfy the filing obligation.

Days 8–18: Complete the VAT reconciliation

Match output VAT to fiscal sales and input VAT to valid supplier evidence. Check imports, exempt or zero-rated supplies, adjustments, withholding VAT credits and prior-period balances. Submit and pay by the 20th.

Quarterly income-tax dates

A taxpayer paying provisional income tax generally estimates annual taxable income and pays four instalments. For a calendar-year taxpayer, TRA lists:

  • First instalment: 31 March
  • Second instalment: 30 June
  • Third instalment: 30 September
  • Fourth instalment: 31 December

For a company with a non-calendar accounting year, the first estimated statement and instalment are normally due three months after the accounting year begins, followed at three-month intervals. Use the accounting period recorded with TRA; do not simply adopt calendar dates.

Example: A company with a 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 year would ordinarily target the end of September, December, March and June for its four instalments, subject to the precise portal assessment. Its final return would ordinarily be due by 31 December 2027, six months after year-end.

Annual income-tax deadline

The final income-tax return and unpaid balance are due within six months after the end of the accounting year. Therefore:

  • Calendar-year company ending 31 December 2026: final return ordinarily due 30 June 2027.
  • Company ending 30 June 2027: final return ordinarily due 31 December 2027.
  • Individual carrying on business on a calendar year: final return ordinarily due 30 June after the year.

The final return does not replace quarterly estimates. Reconcile tax payable, instalments, withholding credits and any assessed balances.

Companies with gross income above TZS 100 million must, under TRA’s current guidance, have the final return prepared and certified by a Certified Public Accountant in public practice. This is a gross-income test, not a taxable-profit test.

Other dates businesses should calendar

TIN and VAT registration

Apply for a TIN within 15 days after commencing the activity that may create tax liability. Apply for VAT within 30 days after becoming liable. These are event-driven deadlines, so they will not appear as a fixed date on a generic calendar.

Objections and assessments

A notice of objection is ordinarily due within 30 days after service of a tax decision. The admission payment is the undisputed amount or one-third of the assessed tax, whichever is greater. If seeking waiver or reduction of that deposit, apply within 15 days. These deadlines run from service, not from the day someone in the finance team happens to open the letter.

EFD malfunction

Report an EFD or VFD error or malfunction to the supplier and Commissioner General within 24 hours. Operational incident logs matter because silence can make an apparent gap in fiscal sales harder to explain.

BRELA obligations

Company annual returns and beneficial-ownership or director changes are corporate-law duties separate from TRA tax returns. Check the BRELA Online Registration System for the company’s current anniversary and outstanding filings.

Example: one month for a growing SME

Mwangaza Services Ltd has 14 employees, is VAT registered and pays office rent and consultants.

  • On 31 August it closes payroll and supplier payments.
  • By 7 September it files and pays August PAYE, SDL and withholding income tax.
  • If appointed as a withholding-VAT agent, by 10 September it files and remits the VAT withheld.
  • By 20 September it files the August VAT return and pays the balance.
  • By 30 September, because it uses a calendar year, it pays the third provisional income-tax instalment.

Suppose August taxable payroll creates PAYE of TZS 3,800,000, gross emoluments are TZS 28,000,000 and SDL applies. SDL is TZS 980,000 at 3.5%. These are separate liabilities, even though both are employment-related and share the 7th deadline.

Required information before each filing

  • TIN and correct tax obligation on the TRA portal.
  • Period opening and closing dates.
  • Trial balance and tax reconciliation.
  • EFD/VFD sales summary and manual adjustment evidence.
  • Valid purchase tax invoices and import documents.
  • Payroll register, employee identifiers and pension schedules.
  • Payment-by-payment withholding schedule and recipient details.
  • Instalment assessments, prior credits and payment confirmations.
  • Reviewer sign-off and authorised bank or mobile-payment access.

Common deadline mistakes to avoid

  • Using the invoice date instead of the payment or withholding point without checking the rule.
  • Filing VAT on the 20th but overlooking PAYE and withholding tax on the 7th.
  • Treating a portal-generated assessment as proof of bank payment.
  • Forgetting a nil VAT return.
  • Using calendar-year instalment dates for a company with an approved different year-end.
  • Waiting for an external accountant without giving them complete records.
  • Ignoring a TRA letter because the amount is disputed; objection time still runs.
  • Assuming BRELA filings and TRA filings are the same.

Tanzania tax filing deadlines checklist

  • Load every active tax obligation into a shared calendar.
  • Add internal due dates at least two working days before statutory dates.
  • Assign a preparer, reviewer and payment approver.
  • Close sales and payroll no later than day 3.
  • File PAYE, SDL and withholding income tax by day 7.
  • File withholding VAT by day 10 if applicable.
  • File VAT by day 20, including nil returns.
  • Reforecast provisional income tax before each quarter.
  • Begin annual accounts at least eight weeks before the final-return deadline.
  • Save submission acknowledgements and payment receipts by period.

Frequently asked questions

When is VAT due in Tanzania?

The ordinary VAT return and payment are due on the 20th day of the month following the tax period. A VAT withholding agent’s separate return and remittance are due within ten days after the period.

When are PAYE and withholding tax due?

PAYE, SDL and income-tax withholding are generally filed and paid within seven days after the end of the month in which the relevant amount arose or was withheld.

Can TRA extend a payment deadline?

TRA says a taxpayer may apply in writing for more time to pay where there is good cause. Approval is not automatic, and interest may continue. An extension to pay is not permission to file late.

What happens when the due date is a weekend?

Check a formal TRA calendar or notice for that period and file early. This guide does not assume an automatic next-business-day concession.
